QR-code route for learning vocational English

With this material students can learn English outside the classroom with the help of their mobile devices. The subjects of the videos are based on the curriculum of the business and administration studies, especially on sales and customer service. Videos are located in InnoOmnia, the development unit of Omnia, The Joint Authority of Education in Espoo Region.

InnoOmnia also serves as an on-the-job learning place for some business and administration students in Omnia. Videos where shot using an iPad and uploaded to YouTube. After that, the qr-codes were made by QRafter, a qr-code generator and printed to paper to make the actual route around the building.

Students read the qr-codes with the qr-reader app using their mobile device. Then they watch and listen to the videos and answer the questions by making a video, recording an audio clip, making a comic strip and/or writing the answer on the notebook of their device. Students can send their products to their own blog and/or they can be watched together in the classroom.

This implementation supports listening to a foreign language, producing language by talking and writing and using a foreign language in authentic situations outside the classroom. It also helps students to concentrate on producing language in their own way by using the channel they feel the most confortable for themselves.
